"Lokal i København" - Explore Copenhagen as a Local!
A 9-day trip experiencing Copenhagen as a local, followed by an optional 7-day Scandinavian festival experience.
Have you ever travelled to an exotic country, seeking its true and authentic style…. but instead finding yourself fighting other tourists to take that perfect photo of one touristy monument after another? Then when you have had enough and need a drink, you find yourself in the same cheesy yet overpriced bars as the people that were annoying you before?
And meanwhile, you wonder: where can I find those secret places where locals hang out at, and what really happens behind closed doors when locals head home? How do local customs manifest themselves in their cultural settings?
If you are passionate about going deeper when you travel, then Culture Unlock has just the trip for you.
Culture Unlock has curated a unique trip to Copenhagen, one of Scandinavia’s metropolitans. Every detail in this trip is carved to help you feel as local as a “Københavner”, which is what Copenhagen locals call themselves.
“Lokal i København” means "Local in Copenhagen" in Danish - and by the end of this trip this is exactly how you will feel after been bicycling around town, picking your own strawberries, lounging in secret cafes, dining in special places... and if you are lucky, even seeing Her Royal Highness Crown Princess Mary riding her bike past you as she takes her kids to school. In this trip you will explore Copenhagen through not only your eyes and ears, but through your senses - to gain an authentic experience of what really it means to be "Danish" - from both a traditional and modern perspective.
The trip is aimed towards:
- Travellers who love to explore from a local's perspective, rather than following the crowded tourist trail
- People who are new to Denmark and seek to build a social network with other interesting and outgoing people.
The trip will be a organised as a group tour with your passionate guide, Caroline, where where all participants - including Caroline - will live in one apartment as a “commune” in the very centre of the old quarter Copenhagen. All group activities are carefully planned to reflect the world of the Copenhagen inhabitant, in an informal manner and still leaving space for you to explore the city on your own.
What are the dates?
The tour is split up into two parts:
- This primary trip is 9 days from 16 June to Friday 25 June.
- Following the main trip, an optional 7-day festival experience at “Roskilde Festival**” is offered, from 26 June to 2 July.
What's the Investment?
The 9-day primary trip is AU$ 1999, and includes a number of very special things:
- Accommodation in a classic private Danish apartment in old part of Copenhagen with your fellow participants
- Breakfast
- Bicycle hire
- Public transportation
- Entry fees to all arranged events, parties and concerts
The fee does not include:
- Flights to/from Copenhagen
- Travel insurance
- Visa charges
- Lunch and dinner
- Drink consumption at group events
While there is no extra charge to join the optional 7-day Roskilde Festival experience, participants are responsible for purchasing their festival access ticket, camping gear and food.
Single day participation is also possible for AU$ 99 per day (excluding accommodation).
Who will lead the tour?
Caroline Grandjean-Thomsen, aka "Caz", personally created and curated "Lokal i København". Caz will be proud to host you on a trip that is very close to her heart:
"I am a half Dane, half Indonesian living in Sydney. I am passionate about Denmark, its people and its culture. I lived in Copenhagen and Aalborg for several years, immersing myself in Danish culture and consequently learnt to speak the Danish language during my time there.
Now living in Sydney, my connections to Denmark continue through the Danish language and culture classes I devise and teach, as well as through my work with Sydney Opera House, where I've had the honour of conversing with His Royal Highness Crown Prince Frederik, Her Royal Highness Crown Princess Mary and curating a 10-year Australian-Danish exchange program for university students. I also collaborate with Jan Utzon (son of the late Jørn Utzon, architect of Sydney Opera House), the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, The Utzon Foundation, The Bikuben Foundation, The Dreyer Foundation and the Obel Family Foundation in Denmark.
I am passionate about reinvigorating people's lives through cultural exploration, interaction and expression. I value immensely the connection that travel brings to cultural learning."

During Caroline's last visit to Copenhagen, she stumbled across the Queen's Guard marching down "Strøget" (the main pedestrian shopping street) headed for Amalienborg Palace for the changing of the guards. The marching band plays music that makes them look like cute toy soldiers!
